Fine Diameter Thermocouple Wire for Automotive Testing

Automotive testing often involves the measurement of temperatures at multiple positions.

However, when thermocouples have thick wires attached to them, thermometer accuracy and the structure itself can be affected.

The answer is extra-fine thermocouple wire with the same reliability, accuracy and economics as standard wire. Omega Engineering offers an ideal solution, originally designed for a leading German auto-maker, to meet these needs.

Sensor interference with measurement targets

There are several ways thermocouple wiring can interfere with temperature measurements.

When the measurement target is small, there is the possibility of disturbing the target.

For example, auto manufacturers may need to measure a small object of just a few millimetres at 200°C. Using a contact sensor at ambient temperature is not the right solution, as a substantial amount of the heat in the object will transfer to the temperature sensor. The temperature of the object will decrease as a result. And the reading will be inaccurate.

In other applications, holes must be drilled in the structure to insert temperature sensors. If the goal is to build a temperature profile, dozens or even hundreds of sensors might be required.

An example is thermocouple measurements in and around a plastic bumper. Here, thicker-diameter wire can quickly affect the integrity of the structure.

To solve issues like these, Omega Engineering has developed 5SRTC-TT-K and 5SRTC-TT-T fine diameter thermocouple wire. Pricing is economical enough for applications where hundreds of thermocouples are used.

This thin and highly accurate shielded Type K thermocouple wire, with a diameter of just 2.4mm, delivers reliable and consistent temperature measurements. The effect on small targets, or those that need to be drilled, is minimised.
